Submitted to Miller County GenWeb by Nancy Thompson: Obituary: Mrs. Ella Ferguson, wife of Harry H. Ferguson, rural letter carrier on route one out of Iberia, died at her home here last Thursday night, Nov. 11, after a prolonged illness. She was the mother of eleven children, all of whom are married and still living. Her passing marks the first invasion of death in the home. Mrs. Ferguson had been critically ill for a number of weeks and all the children had been at her bedside. However, three of the sons--Oral, Wayne and Harold of Glendale, Calif., were compelled to return to their homes about two weeks ago and were unable to make the long journey back here to attend the funeral, due to war conditions. All the other children were at her bedside when death came. Impressive funeral services, conducted by Rev. Otto Shearer, assisted by Rev. W. V. Gastian, were held from the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon, at two o'clock. Both the Royal Neighbors and Ladies Auxiliary of the Rural Letter Carriers Association, of which Mrs. Ferguson was a member, also assisted in the service by paying their last tribute of love and devotion to the departed neighbor. Members of the Rural Carriers Association acted as pallbearers. A quartet consisting of Mrs. Glenn Martin, Mrs. Hilary Pemberton, Mr. C. L. Casey and Russell Mobley, accompanied by Mrs. C. L. Casey on the piano, furnished appropriate music. The Adams and Casey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, and interment was in the Iberia Cemetery. Ella Margaret Skaggs was born at Lanes Prairie, Maries County, Missouri, on November 6, 1886, being at the time of her death, 57 years and 5 days old. She was married to Harry H. At an early age she united with the Methodist Church at Boles Chapel, Lanes Prairie, MO, later transferring her membership to the Iberia Methodist Church of which she was a loyal member until the time of her death. Her death occurred November 11 at her home in Iberia, at 10:10 p.m. after a long illness. Her patience, courage and cheerfulness during her illness was a testimony of Christian living. Submitted to Miller County GenWeb by Nancy Thompson: Obituary/News Article, Springfield News-Leader, August 1, 1996 Though Mattie Mace never weighed more than 100 pounds, those who knew her say her heart and zest for life were big enough to fill a room. And when Mace died Thursday, friends and loved ones wondered who would fill the gap. They also marveled at how a woman her age--she turned 107 June 27--could act 80; no, make that 70. "She loved life. She loved everything about it. She loved to go. She loved to talk," said daughter Helen Hasentine, 76. "She always wanted that good time." Good times filled her years, friends say. As one put it, "She loved everybody, especially the men." Mace voted in every presidential election since women gained the right to vote in 1919. This year, watching politicians on television, she piped in when she didn't like what they said. Friend Melva Irby said her granddaughter, Cassidy Dickinson was 3 when she befriended Mace nine years ago while walking at Battlefield Mall. She said, "Grandma, can I take her to Show-and-Tell?" Irby says of when Cassidy was in third grade, "She went twice, and all the children thought Mattie belonged to them." Haseltine said her mother always liked to make people laugh. "She would joke with people and say 'I think I'll go to a dance next week.'" The following article appeared in the Springfield News-Leader, June 26, 1996 SPRINGFIELD WOMAN CELEBRATES 107 YEARS In more than 100 years on Earth, Mattie Mace has seen a lot of firsts. In 1919, she saw women gain the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment. She voted in every presidential election after that. On August 15, 1919, she was the first airplane in her hometown of Iberia. It was also the day her youngest daughter was born. And in Christmas 1922 or '23 her family was the first in Iberia to have a set of Christmas tree lights. So pardon the centenarian if turning 107 Thursday was no big deal. Asked how it felt, Mace said: "Pretty good. It could be a lot worse." To family and friends, it was reason to throw a party at the Springfield Residential Center where Mace has lived for two weeks. "She's always been first in line to have a good time," said her daughter Helen Haseltine of Springfield. Surrounded by about 65 family members, friends and other center residents, Mace ate birthday cake and shared the key to her longevity. "Well, I became a Christian when I was 8 years old." she said. "And I've been a Christian all my life." Genes may have something to do with it, too. Mace's father lived to be 101, and two great-uncles also lived to be well over 100. Mace, the youngest of 14 children, was born in 1889 in Iberia to John and Dorcas Ferguson. Her father was a veteran of the Civil War and served in the Battle of Wilson's Creek. A picture of Mace's father and mother rested Thursday on a table near the punch and a half-chocolate, half-vanilla sheet cake. Also there: photos of Mace at 16 and Mace with her three daughters. One daughter died more than a year ago. On another table draped in pink paper tablecloths was a card that proved the difficulty of finding birthday greetings for a person Mace's age. It read: "On your 100th Birthday with Congratulations and Best Wishes for your Happiness." Next to the last zero was a handwritten plus sign and the number 7. Family members marveled at Mace's attitude toward life. "She's got the best spirit of anybody I know--even younger people," said Linda Adams, who is married to Mace's grandson Tom Adams. "I wish I had part of it." "She has a great family," Tom Adams said. "She's lived for her family." Mace agreed, for when asked what the most special moment in her life was, she had only this to say: "My babies. When my first baby was in my arms. I love my children."
